Fury in Her Eyes by Phillip Vega is a compelling tale about a boy’s teenage life, a mysterious villain, and the excitement of young love. Who hit Jackie in the head with a rock? That’s the question on everyone’s minds. Oliver Morales finds himself perplexed by the attack and is drawn to finding the person at fault. The clues are pointing to Navil Laurent—a very attractive girl he considers his muse.
Ollie answers the call to dig deeper for answers despite the seriousness of the situation, putting him in a very compromising position. An older Ollie reflects on this tumultuous and thrilling time in his life as he heals from haunting memories and recalls a terrible Capitol attack. Can Ollie survive the revelation of the troubling secrets that lie in his path? Will he make peace with the people who have wronged him in the past?
The book gives you two well-built stories in one. It alternates between the protagonist’s teenage world and his more mature years, connecting the two periods with brilliant hints and pieces of information that satisfy your curiosity gradually. The stories about Ollie’s teenage years focus more on the themes of young love, high school drama, mystery, and incarceration. In Ollie’s older years, we get to follow his memories of the Capitol attack and his experience of PTSD.
Ollie’s passionate personality and his troubles with PTSD make him very endearing and easily likable. He suffers from flashbacks involving the chaos of explosions, distant gunfire, and falling victim to an ambush. The intensity of his close call with death is made glaring with carefully crafted words like, “I held on for dear life. Breathe, Ollie… breathe.” Thus, Fury in Her Eyes offers readers a chance to revel in a very suspenseful and memorable reading experience.
I especially loved the book’s mysterious atmosphere. I was glued to it throughout and couldn’t wait to find out who attacked Jackie. Ollie’s internal conflict further adds to the compelling experience since he is seen contemplating a series of serious questions as he deals with troubling suspicions. Furthermore, the author’s poetic language is quite enjoyable. For example, in describing the protagonist’s thoughts about the freshness of the air, Phillip writes that it “was like God ran it through a special filter and added a pinch of sweetener just for me.”
Overall, Fury in Her Eyes is a well-connected and nuanced narrative with such intriguing elements as compelling secrets, dangerous quests, immersing thriller themes, and more. Phillip has written a tale that will remind mature readers of their first love and keep them eager for more engaging twists as they immerse themselves in its suspense-filled pages.
