Here’s a science fiction novel that takes its time and earns that time. Universe of Lost Messages follows several characters — a teen named Cheeta, a kidnapped megastar named Izzie, a reclusive nature-lover named Tristan — as they navigate a future America where celebrity is power and a shadowy political organization wants to control both.
The metaverse of floating lost messages is a genuinely interesting invention. The class system between Chav and Elite is built with enough detail to feel real. And The Fist is a convincing antagonist — the kind of organization that wants to control people by controlling what they feel.
Good, thoughtful science fiction. Not a quick read, but the right kind of slow.
