I don’t read a lot of Cuban spy thrillers. But I read this one, and I’ll tell you straight — The Advent House pours clean. Jorgenson sets up two characters who stumble into each other’s lives and then into serious trouble with state security, and never lets the tension go flat.

The two uncles in this book are the kind of men you don’t want to owe anything to. Gabriela kept a deathbed promise. Tomas thought his mother was dead. Together they get tangled in exactly the kind of family politics that makes a tavern brawl look like a pleasant evening.

The Bavarian Advent house is where it gets interesting — history, faith, and survival wrapped up tight. Worth a read. I wouldn’t say no to a second round.
